Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE Main) is a national level undergraduate (UG) engineering entrance exam conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for admission to B.Tech/B.E programs in 33 NITs (National Institutes Of Technology) and 20 IIITs (Indian Institute Of Information Technology). It is also the first stage for admission in 23 IITs (Indian Institute Of Technology).
This Examination, originally called AIEEE, was renamed as Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT Main) in April 2013. IIT Mains exam held in the first week of April and the result declares in the last week of May or in the first week of June. All the candidates that participate in the exam are given ranks on the basis of all India and state. Thus, candidates get an All India Rank (AIR) and State Rank (SR).
JEE Main Exam Structure
JEE Main consists of two papers:
Paper-I: – For B.Tech/B.E Courses
Paper-II: – For B.Arch Courses
A candidate can choose any one or both papers. Paper-I has three sections including Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. All the three sections have equal marks weight age. Each section has 30 multiple choice objective type questions having four options. Paper-II has negative marking wherein an incorrect answer is negatively marked by one-fourth of the maximum mark allotted to the question.
Paper-II has also three sections including Mathematics, Drawing, and Aptitude. Mathematics and Aptitude have Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) and Drawing section has Drawing based questions. The time duration for each paper is 3 hours. The candidates can opt the question paper in any language either English or Hindi.
CBSE conducts Paper-I Computer based test mode for first one lakh candidates who opted for the same and rest of the candidates took the examination in conventional pen and paper mode. The number of attempts one can avail is limited to three in consecutive years.
JEE Main Application Form
Step 1- Registration: Candidates have to register themselves through the official website of JEE Main. In 1st step, a password will be generated.
Step 2- Filling Information: In this step candidates have to fill their personal details, educational details, exam related details and other important details.
Step 3- Uploading of Image and Signature: In this step, candidates have to upload their photo, signature and left-hand thumb impression properly.
Step 4- Payment Fee: Candidates can pay the fee through online method or with e-challan.
Step 5- Print Out Application Form: After fee payment, the final step is to download the acknowledgment page for future purpose.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for the JEE Main have to meet the eligibility criteria in order to get the admission. If candidates do not fulfill the criteria then He/She will not be able to participate in the examination. So we advise candidates to read the terms and conditions carefully:-
- Age: Applicant should have the age 25 years to be eligible for the admission. For SC/ST/PwD category relaxation in the age is 5 years.
- Academic Requirements: The applicant should have qualified the 12th standard or the applicant who is appearing for the 12th standard final exams in the same year.
- Qualifying Marks: The general category applicant should have scored minimum 75% marks and SC/ST category applicant should score at least 65% marks.
- Number Of Subjects: The applicant should have to take at least 5 subjects in 12th standard. If the applicant has only 4 subjects then He/She will not be able to participate in the examination.
- Aadhar Card Number: This is the new criteria added by the CBSE from the Year 2017-18 that the applicant must have the registered Aadhaar card number to fill the application form.
- Number of Attempts: The applicant will be able to apply in JEE Mains exam only 3 times in consecutive years.
JEE Main Participating Institutes
JEE Main is a gateway for the applicants into the various engineering institutes of India. The participating Institutes of JEE Main include 31 NITs (National Institutes of Technology), 20 IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology) and 19 GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutions). Some of the states also offer admissions to undergraduate engineering on the basis of JEE Main score. Some of the reputed private engineering institutes also offer admission on the basis of this exam.
JEE Main Counselling
The JEE Main Counselling is conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Only those applicants can participate in the counseling who have qualified the JEE Main exam. Applicants have to register themselves for the counseling and have to select their preferred colleges and courses. After this online allocation of the seats is done on the basis of applicant’s rank, category, seat availability and other factors. After seat allotment applicant have to report to the college for document verification and fee payment. JoSAA conducts 6 rounds of counsellings and applicants will be allotted into NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
