SAT Test Pattern 2017 – Check Exam Format Here

SAT Test Pattern 2017 is designed by the College Board which is the conducting authority of SAT. SAT is conducted in two formats: SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Test. Both tests have different formats to evaluate candidate’s knowledge and skills. SAT Reasoning test measures test taker’s reading, writing, and mathematical ability while SAT Subject test measures candidate’s excellence in a specific subject.

SAT 2017 Test pattern has been changed in March 2016 by the College Board. Now the test will be measured on the scale of 400-1600 as both the sections which are Evidence-Based Reading/Writing and Math will be reported on the scale 200-800 each. Test Pattern of Reasoning Test

According to SAT Test Pattern, Reasoning test has four sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, Reading Test, Writing and Language Test and Maths while essay as optional. The total number of questions are 154 including 1 question on the essay. Total time duration for the test is 3 hours and candidates will be given 50 minutes extra for the essay which is optional. This section has total 44 questions and time duration for this section is 35 minutes. The section carries a short essay and multiple choice questions which are based on identifying errors and improving grammar and usage.

Critical Reading

This section carries 52 number of questions and time given to complete this section is 65 minutes. The critical reading section includes reading passage and sentence completion. The questions asked in this part are based on either short passage reading or long passage reading. The questions are multiple choice type.


Mathematics sections consist of 57 number of questions and time duration for this section is 80 minutes. This section carries the question based on arithmetic operations, algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability.

SAT Subject Test Pattern

This test is based on specific subjects. The time duration for the SAT Subject test is 1 hour. Candidates can take the subject test for more than one subject or as required by the Institute for which he/she applying. Candidates can select the subject from the below list according to their interest.
