GATE Exam Pattern 2018 – GATE Paper Pattern/Marking Scheme

GATE Exam Pattern

Each candidate must go through the paper pattern of the particular exam for which he/she is preparing. GATE Exam Pattern 2018 has announced by the conducting body which is IIT Guwahati for this year. The exam pattern of GATE 2018 carries the information of marking scheme, type of questions, the total number of questions, section wise marks distribution, the total time duration of exam etc. GATE 2018 Exam Pattern helps the candidates to understand the actual structure of the exam by which candidates can make their strategy for preparation.

GATE is conducted online and the total time duration of the exam will be 3 hours. The exam will carry two types of questions that are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). During the exam, candidates have to select the correct answer for MCQs type questions while for Numerical type questions, they have to enter the numeric answer by mouse on a virtual keypad on the screen.   • For 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect Answer.

  • No negative marking for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.

Note: – General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics will be mandatory for all papers.

Exam Mode

The GATE 2018 will be conducted in online mode (Computer-Based Test). Candidates will be provided with the computers at the exam centers to take the test.

Exam Duration

Total time duration of the exam will be 3 Hours or 180 Minutes. After the completion of the time, the screen will automatically close.

Type of Questions

GATE exam will have two types of questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

  • Each question will carry four options out of which candidates have to select the correct one.
  • The questions will carry 1 mark as well as 2 marks.

Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

  • The questions will carry 1 mark as well as 2 marks.
  • The answer of this type of question will be a number which candidates have to enter using the mouse and virtual keyboard.
  • There will be no choice for these questions.

Sections

The question paper of GATE will have three sections: General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, Subject-specific section. General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics are mandatory for all except XL papers. XL papers will have Chemistry instead of Engineering Mathematics. General Aptitude will have 10 questions, 5 questions carrying 1 mark and remaining 5 carrying 2 marks.

Marks Distribution

  • The question paper of GATE will carry 85 marks of specific subjects and 15 marks of General Aptitude.
  • The candidates of Papers codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF, and XE have to attempt the compulsory section that is Engineering Mathematics having 15% of total marks. Remaining 70% marks will be specific subjects.
  • The paper codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, and XL, will have 85% of the total marks of specific subjects.

Marking Scheme

  • For 1 mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
  • For 2 mark question, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
  • There will be no negative marking for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.

GATE Exam Pattern For GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper

  • The GG paper has two parts: Part A and Part B.
  • Part A is mandatory.
  • Part B has two sections: Geology (Section 1) and Geophysics (Section 2)
  • Candidates can choose any section for which they want to apply.
